Built By Bells
Anyone who watches my Instagram accounts, knows I love the kettlebell. And, as you may have noticed, I am putting them in our class WODs more and more frequently these days. I figured many of you might be wondering why…
Because I want you to be a better athlete.
The development of kettlebells can be traced back to Russian farmers in the 1700s, as an implement originally used to weigh crops. The farmers noticed that they became stronger through the use of these implements, and used them to show off their strength at festivals. Later, the kettlebell was used as a training tool for the Soviet army.
I encourage all of you to learn to love the kettlebell! Here are a few reasons why:
These are movements that produce maximum velocity and acceleration over the shortest amount of time. In other words, they are fantastic developers of explosiveness and power – two valuable qualities that are applicable to every other facet of your fitness.
2. They are a true functional movement.
Kettlebell training is functional exercise at its best, utilizing the body as a whole. Almost every muscle group in the body has to work together to execute the movements you do with a kettlebell. Rarely in life do we only use one muscle group at a time. The kettlebell trains your entire body to work together efficiently.
3. Kettlebell training increases work capacity.
You’ll be able to do more work, more quickly, and sustain the effort for a longer period of time. CrossFit’s definition of fitness? Work capacity of over broad time and modal domains. Which means kettlebell training makes you more fit, which is something I think we’re all trying to become. Don’t believe me? … Just check out my score on 19.1 after having done months of ONLY kettlebell work… with a broken foot. The proof is in the pudding!
4. You’re looking to lean out.
While you can’t out-train a poor diet, kettlebell workouts are a great conditioning tool for fat loss, as they burn a ton of calories during the workout, and cause your body to continue to burn them well after you are finished.
5. They’re fun and convenient!
We have a lot of people at CrossFit Dark Horse who travel for work, where time and equipment are limited. Kettlebell workouts can be quick and while still incredibly effective, and most hotel gyms these days have them. But most of all, kettlebells are fun. They encourage you to try new movements, new combinations, and can be more challenging than you ever thought possible.
So don’t cherry pick the next time you see kettlebell work in Wodify. View it as a fast track to better fitness!
