Tips For A Great CF Open Experience

The CrossFit Open is an exciting time of a year for CrossFit gyms and their members.  For CFDH, Friday nights become small in-house competitions, and the whole community comes together to support and encourage each other in fitness in a way that only happens this time of year.

For some people who aspire to the achieve the highest competitive level in CrossFit, the Open is a big deal because it starts the journey to the CrossFit Games in July.  For others, it’s a chance to see how you compare to other athletes from across the globe.  For others, it’s a chance to workout in a competition-like setting, with friends standing by encouraging you to do the best you can do.

Here are 7 tips to help you have a great CrossFit Open experience:

 

1.  Don’t Put Too Much Pressure On Yourself

Get nervous and excited about the workouts; that’s part of the fun of it, but don’t let it get in the way of your success. Only worry about what you can control: preparing for each workout, strategizing the best plan for you, and recovering from the hard work you put in.  Trust that your training will be able to take on whatever is brought your way.

 

2.  Just Show Up

It doesn’t matter if you’re brand new fresh out of Fundamentals, or if you have been doing CrossFit since you could walk.  Everyone can participate and have a great time (you do not have to officially sign-up for the Open to participate).  Every workout can be scaled, and everyone can improve just by being there.  How often can you get better without even working out?!   What I mean by that is this: during the open each athlete will have a judge (a fellow athlete), holding them to a specific standard. This is great for two reasons; first, you get to see and determine what quality movement looks like and develop a keen eye for it.  Second, you will then correct inefficiencies or poor mechanics in your own movement based on what you see in other people.

 

3.  Ignore The Clock

Forget that pesky timer on the wall and just do you.  For most people it’s better to just go as hard as you can until your judge says to stop.  When the time is up or the workout complete, then take a peak at the clock and see what you accomplished. Focusing on the task at hand is what will lead to being successful in these workouts. Time ticks away at the same speed regardless of how often you look at it so just keep working.

 

4.  Give It All You Got

Take a really good shot at these workouts.  You’ll often surprise yourself with what you can do! When a weakness shows up just try to maneuver through it as best you can, but do not avoid it.  Dodging the workouts you struggle with is the best way to ensure that you will always struggle with them.  Embrace the pain and be happy knowing you did the best YOU could do. Be grateful you’re healthy enough to take on such difficult physical tasks.

 

5.  Take Care Of Yourself

These workouts are meant to be tough and to test your level of fitness.  So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if you’re more sore than usual afterward.  There are several things you can do to help your body recover from these workouts:  mobilize, take an active rest day (think hikes, long walks, and other leisure activities), up your fish oil intake, and get a massage.  Also, if you’ve never had a session with our in house chiropractic sports practitioner and therpaist, Adam, this would be a great opportunity. He keeps myself and other members at the gym in tip top shape!

 

6.  Record Your Scores!

Trust me!  You’ll be happy you did!  Nothing’s better than looking up how you did on a workout to see that you crushed your old score. Recording notable scores on workouts and lifts is the best way to prove your progress and see how far you’ve come.   It’s really easy to do in WodTogether.  If you don’t know how, ask a coach to show you!

 

7.  Have Fun

After all, thats what we’re all doing here, right?   Bring your significant other, your kids, and/or your friends!  Let them see what you’ve been up to at the gym and give them the chance to cheer you on! As for the workouts, if you mess up, or underestimate a workout, then you have two choices: laugh it off or do it again in a day or two!  One of the great things about the Open is that you have 5 days to do the workout as many times as you like to get the best score.   And!  Did somebody say prizes? and free treats?!  Yep, each Friday Night is guaranteed to be fun between the people that will be there, the treats, and prizes from our favorite places!
